I have an issue – who should I contact?
You should contact your local workplace representative for any support, advice or representation needs that you may have. If you are unsure who your local representative is, or do not believe that there is a representative in your workplace then you should contact the branch.
What can UNISON do to help me?
UNISON undertakes to provide members with representation and advice for those experiencing issues at work. This might include providing you with advice about a disciplinary investigation and attending any formal meetings with you.
There are also a number of additional benefits that members are able to access.
I have a disciplinary, what should I do?
You should contact your local workplace representative immediately. If you are unsure who this is, or believe that you do not have one then you should contact the branch.
Before doing so, ensure you do the following:
- Have all documentation ready to hand. This may include; formal letters from your employer, relevant correspondence, and any evidence relating to your case.
- Quote your membership number (if known), full name and your employer
- Write a summary of your case including all relevant information
- Obtain a copy of the disciplinary procedure
When contacting your Steward or the Branch please ensure that you have the above ready to hand.
If you have only recently joined UNISON then you may not be able to receive all of the unions’ support in accordance with the rules of the union. Please see the Branch Guide to Advice and Representation for further information.
I am being bullied/ discriminated against
If you are experiencing any issue at work which is causing you concern (e.g. bullying and harassment / discrimination) then it is important to record information of any incidents and to retain any evidence relevant to your case (e.g. written correspondence). Prepare a written summary of your concerns and details of incidents/ evidence. You should then either:
- Contact your local UNISON representative for advice
or - Contact the CVO branch for advice
Can UNISON offer me legal advice and support?
Our activists and branch staff will initially seek to achieve your desired outcome through negotiation with your employer. All activists have had training and the branch staff have detailed knowledge and experience of employment law. Where neccessary we may refer your case to UNISON solicitors for a legal assessment, (which in some cases may mean us supporting a legal claim).
It is very important that you do not seek alternative independent legal advice or contact ACAS without advice from us at any point, as this will mean that we can no longer offer support and representation.
There is an issue with Health and Safety at work, what should I do?
You should contact your local workplace representative immediately. If you are unsure who this is, or believe that you do not have one then you should contact the branch.
When doing so, please ensure that you have all documentation relevant to the case to hand. The steward or branch employee reviewing your case will need as much relevant information as possible in order to effectively process your case.
